What is Dual Duel?
- Dual Duel is an original team tournament created by Tigran Shaginian.
Who can fence in Dual Duel?
- If the fencers are 10 or older, they can compete with the adults. If there are enough younger teams, the tournaments will be separated. If there are younger competitors with not enough youth teams, it will be at the discretion of Tigran Shaginian or the organizer as to whether the younger fencer can compete with the mixed adult crowd.
Can the teams be mixed?
-The teams can be comprised of both genders or be of the same gender.
What equipment is needed?
-All the standard fencing equipment is necessary. Girls must wear chest protectors. Knickers must be worn.
Are baseball pants allowed?
-Yes, but only if the fencer is fully protected and there is no gap between the knickers and the jacket visible to other fencers.
Do you need a USFA membership?
-Since it is not recognized as a USFA event, USFA membership is not required.
Do I need to come with a team already made?
-You can, but the answer is no. We can pair single fencers into teams as the situation allows.
Can I be a part of two teams?
-Only if the two teams are not in the same event. A fencer can be both on a youth and adult team, but not on two adult teams at the same tournament.
What are the rules?
-It is two-on-two fencing with basic epee rules. Two teams fence each other at the same time. The fencers of one team are connected to the same scoring machine as their reels are linked with a connector. So each team, regardless of who made the touch, will only have one light. The fencers can hit either opponent, so hits can be directly in front or diagonal. There are two ways to score. In pools, a touch is scored whenever one person from a team is touched or it’s a double touch. Both members of one team do not need to be eliminated for the other team to earn a touch. However, in direct elimination, a team must eliminate both fencers on the other team to score. If one person is hit, it becomes two-on-one until the other team is eliminated or it becomes one-on-one and a touch is earned. Fencers of one team must not cross shoulders with the opposing team, similarly in regular epee fencing.
What happens if there is a double touch?
-Then both fencers are eliminated.
How do you score?
-You earn a touch by eliminating both fencers of the other team in direct eliminations or by hitting the other team once in pools.
What is the format?
- There will be 5 touch pool bouts with 100% promotion and 5 touch direct elimination with the necessity of both members of a team to be eliminated to earn a touch.
Anything else?
-Not really.
